In this review/reflection I will be going over the book we read, the movie we watched and the project we worked on with the kids in L.A.
The Book
First up is the book. I enjoyed this book very much I would read it again if I got the chance. I don’t really have a favorite character, because S.E. Hinton wrote the book in a way that I like all of them. I guess if I had to pick just one person to be my favorite, I would pick Darry. I would pick him because he works so hard to support his brothers, and he tries to be a father to Sodapop and Ponyboy. He also does not want to be seperated from his brothers.
One of my favorite parts of the book was when Ponyboy and Johnny went into the burning church to save the kids. I like this part because Hinton tells us that Johnny is actually having fun. I also like this part because it is unusual for a greaser to do something heroic like that. What is weird about this part is that I also dislike it. The reason for this is Johnny breaking his back and getting burned real bad. As a result of this he dies and Dally also gets himself killed because Johnny was the only thing he loved.
The Movie
The movie wasn’t bad, but I like the book better because the movie dosn’t show all of the parts that the book has. The movie doesn’t show the characters like the book describes and it changes the story line a bit. So basically the book is better than the movie. (This is usually true if the book is written first.) I don’t have alot to say about the movie because it was pretty much like the book, and I already talked about that.
The Project
My project group was Friendship 3. Of course our project had to be about friendship because of the title. Most people had lots of comunication problems, and never did finish their projects. I think my group had pretty good comunication. We chatted quite often and worked out the misunderstandings.
However we did have tecnical problems. See, my group was doing a voice thread and everyone was supposed to take 3 pictures, load them on one voice thread and do their own sound/voice for those pictures. Well, when I recorded and tried to listen to what I just did I couldn’t hear anything, so I had to get a guy from my group to record it for me. Other problems we had included internet not working and microphones breaking. We did finish in the end and you can see it on the link I posted earlier.
I think that we made a good choice in chooseing to do a voice thread instead of a powerpoint or movie. It was easier to put it all together in the end. As I said before, some people have not finished because they could not put all their stuff together.
All in all, I liked doing a novel study on the Outsiders, not just because it was a good book with many themes, but because we did lots of interesting things with the book.
